Getty Images Creates Flickr Collection

New York, NY (AB) — Getty Images, which licenses news and other photos, Tuesday announced a collection based on submissions from the photo-sharing site Flickr, owned by Yahoo.

In a statement, Andy Saunders, Vice President of Creative Imagery at Getty Images said “Flickr’s philosophy of personal sharing and immediacy has already impacted commercial photography.” Photos posted on Flickr are often used as a free source of images by blogs and Websites. A large number of the images are made available under Creative Commons licensing, allowing the photos to be reprinted.

Getty Images said Flickr members will be invited to join the licensing arrangement. At first, the agreement covers thousands of images, with plans to add many more.

Getty sells the images for between $500 to $600 a piece for exclusive photos or $250 for non-exclusive items. Photographers get a 30 to 40 percent cut for the exclusive photos or 20 percent for the non-exclusive images.

Yahoo will also get a cut, although the amount was not disclosed.

In an interview with The New York Times, Getty Images co-founder and CEO Jonathan Klein said Flickr photos are valuable because they provide advertisers a sense of authenticity not available with commercial photos.

In 2007, a Texas teenager sued Virgin Mobile after a picture of her posted to Flickr was used in an advertising campaign.
